[FONT=verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif]In a letter dated April 24 and sent to ICANN CEO Paul Twomey, GAC (Governmental Advisory Committee) Chairman Janis Karklins requests increased protection for geographic names under ICANN's new gTLD program.
"Geographic names are special cases and should have special rules applying to them," says the GAC letter. The governments say they agree with recent ccNSO recommendations that geographic names be treated as ccTLDs.
Both bodies seem to be trying to pre-empt the new gTLD program. "The new gTLD procedure should primarily be intended to introduce TLDs which most likely would not be objected on any grounds," says the GAC letter. "It would be sensible to enable Governments (or the GAC) to object to an application for a gTLD on public interests grounds without going through the time and cost of the formal objection process."
The GAC is also asking for geographic names contained in certain ISO lists to be reserved at the second level.
I just have to wonder. All these people - the ccNSO, the GAC, the IP community – complaining about the new gTLD program today were involved in its genesis right from the get-go. So why have they waited until now to raise their voices and request major changes to the program? Changes which, if implemented by ICANN, will undoubtedly result in significant delays for the program.[/FONT]
